It is unfortunate that “diabetes” runs in our family. People whose first degree-relatives suffering from the illness have higher chances of getting diabetes, especially type 2 diabetes.

Not to be confused, there are different types of diabetes – Type 1, Type 2 and Gestational Diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is less common than Type 2. Of 100 people that have diabetes, 90% of them will have Type 2. Type 1 is much more common among younger people.

Let’s focus more on the Type 2. Actually, it is considered to be a progressive disease that has no cure, but with many well-established treatments. When a person develops a diabetes, first thing that he has to learn is self-discipline or self-control because this would greatly affect his diet and lifestyle.

To keep his sugar level low, he has to exercise regularly and watch his diet. Naturally, your doctors will give you as much information as they can about the changes that have to adhere to. If you suffer from diabetes or if your loved one is suffering from it, there’s also diabetic exchange plan that you can look up online.

I find the Diabetic Exchange system to be extremely helpful. It provides information on how to get a proper mix of calories, carbohydrates and other nutrients that a patient’s body needs.
