Who Says Boys are Better in Math?
Posted by pink on August 1, 2008
I’m not trying to initiate a battle of the sexes with the given question. Well, there’s already an answer to that. A recent study by University of Wisconsin-Madison led by Janet Hyde concluded that girls are just as good as boys when it comes to Math. The researchers found no difference in the scores of boys versus girls in primary and secondary school. This is due to the increasing numbers of girls taking advanced math classes such as calculus. However, women needs more encouragement when it comes to this field.Women are now earning 48 percent of undergraduate college degrees in math; they still lag far behind in physics and engineering.
Speaking of that, if you want a resource that encourages girls to excel in math and science, I suggest you visit Braincake. (Oh! I dig the girly look of the site.) They are here to help girls realize that they can be architects of change-envisioning, planning, organizing, shaping, and building a better world – with math and science as their tools (I borrowed that from the editor’s words).

I’m glad to see the stats are changing as girls’ math scores typically declined starting in junior high. There is no reason girls can’t excel at math and science and so many fantastic career opportunities for them in these fields.

Hi Patricia, I agree with you. Girls should stop thinking that this field is a man’s domain. We should not be afraid to try new things. Besides, math skills can be learned (as long as we persevere).
